Episode 22: Socktober Special - Afterthought and Forethought heel
Gemma AdevaThe month of October on the podcast is dedicated to Socktober, so I hope you enjoy knitting socks and discovering new things! This time, I'm going to tell you all about two very popular heel styles: the Afterthought Heel and its companion, the Forethought Heel. Although it may sound like gibberish to you now, you've probably knitted it more than once without knowing its name. I've also prepared a couple of downloadable templates so you can always put these heel styles in the right place 😉
NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE
Sections: On my needles, Knitflix.
– We have a date at the next edition of Barcelona Knits on the weekend of November 5th and 6th , yes! After two years of a virtual festival, we'll see each other again, talk about wool, and go crazy shopping 😀 If you're going to the fair, don't forget to stop by and say hello, I'm really excited to meet you.
– My Halloween socks are finished and blocked! I won’t lie, I still need to finish off all the leftover yarn, but that can wait for a few days… I’ve named them “Pairfectly Spooky,” a combination of the name of this Regia quality and the name of the KAL, lol. The yarn I used is Regia Sock Setesdal by Arne & Carlos , in shade 3827. I followed the basic pattern inside the band, although I made small modifications so that the colors fell where I wanted.
– Here you can see Audry Nicklin’s Celestarium —it’s absolutely incredible.
– If you want to see all the photos of my Tin Roof and the modifications I made to weave it, I have finally published the post 😛
– Series mentioned in Knitflix: Resident Evil (series), The Assistant, The Midnight Club.
– This episode comes with two downloadable templates so you can place the Afterthought and Forethought Heel socks in the perfect spot from now on without going crazy. You can download the Afterthought Heel chart here and the Forethought Heel chart here . As you can see, the measurement provided in the chart is for knitting the Afterthought Heel socks from the toe, but it’s the same if you knit them from the rib. In the case of the Forethought, I’ve included measurements for both versions (Top down and Toe up) since we can’t modify the heel placement once we’ve marked it. You’ll see that the measurements for the toe up version are the same as for the Afterthought Heel, and if you want, you can use this same chart to knit the Afterthought socks in both directions.
– In this tutorial you can see the mini gusset modification I talk about in the podcast. And if your problem is the holes that usually remain at both ends of the heel, don't miss this video . My favorite way to knit this heel is by combining the mini gusset and adding knit rows.
You no longer have an excuse to knit socks using these two types of heels, they will always turn out perfect 😀
